Welcome and let me start by introducing myself.  My name is Jen and I am a mother of 5 children.  For all of my married life I dreamed of moving out of the city and into the country.  I realized after building our first home in the suburbs that I yearned for wide open spaces and trees.  My heart called me to grow our own food and learn the skills of my grandmother's generation.  I just wasn't sure how I would get there.

The very step in our journey was to simplify our lives.  I read countless books on simplicity and tried to implement them into our family's life.  We joined Marie Kondo as we minimized the items in our possession.  Dave Ramsey lead us on a financial journey to place us in a position to be able to attempt this lifestyle with a sense of financial peace. I  realized that despite not being able to immediately jump into our homesteading journey I was actually preparing myself over time to make what we were about to do successful.

Garden boxes, grow lights and books taught me the skills that I lacked in gardening.  Jar by jar I learned about food storage as I canned.  We would take trips out of the city to forage for berries.  Our kitchen dehydrator helped extend the shelf life of the food we wanted to preserve.  As I prepared in my heart that one day I would be out in the country I also trained myself in the skills I desperately wanted to learn.  It was these series of little steps that helped shape the life I now live.

Some days the amount of information seemed overwhelming but I had heard a saying that stuck with me and I try to live it to this day: Little by little one travels far.  I decided to adopt this as a motto for our life.  Even though I couldn't imagine how we could get to where we are now because the journey seemed so long, I knew we could make it if we just went one step at a time and then another.
